Here the list of endemic birds to Peru updated to 2021 and short birding tours for birdwatchers from all over the world.
If you are interested in watching any specific bird species, let us know through the following link:
After Local Birding guides were searching about some new birding routes in Cuzco, they got a conclusion. “Some specific birding spots are actually hidden between Cuzco and Machupicchu” such as the new route on Pachar Valley; high way to Abra Malaga; high Andean lakes including Huacarpay Lake; Amaru road near by Sacred Valley and Huyro – Santa Maria on the way to Santa Teresa road (Cloud forest) that we will talk a little bit about some of them.
It is worth to mention some classic birding routes as well such as Manu Road (a very famous birding route in Southern Peru); birding trails in Machupicchu along Vilcanota River.
Everyone know that more than ten thousand birds species occurs in the worldwide around 18 % of them occurs in Peru with more than hundred and twenty bird species, which are endemic to Peru.
Some tips to visit birding routes in Cuzco
Starting from Cuzco you can go birding to several birding routes, most of them with very colorful and interesting birds species for birdwatchers and bird photographers on the high Andes.
Andean Condor (Vultur griphus) is the biggest bird in Cuzco that you can see with 99.9999 % of chances in only one full day tour visiting a Canyon on the Apurimac River, Three hours driving from Cuzco.
Hummingbirds in Cusco are very interesting for birders
If you are visiting America by first time, you definitely have not ever seen a Hummingbird.
Hummingbirds are the smallest bird species on the earth. Cuzco is the place where you get to see several hummingbird species, of course some of them are endemic to Andes in Peru such as Bearded Mountaineer (Oreonimpha nobilis) in the Andes; another interesting hummingbird is the biggest hummingbird of the world, which is Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas) both of them easy to see for birders in Cuzco. By the way, Sparkling Violet-Ear (Colibri coruscans) is the most common hummingbird in Cuzco.
Birding Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is a very good starting point to start birding in Cuzco Peru, this beautiful place is located on the way going from Cuzco to Machupicchu, and at the same time, this is a very touristic place, where you can stay in a comfortable hotel while you are watching birds.
Birding Abra Malaga
Abra Malaga is very close to Ollantaytambo and very good for birding, this amazing birding site harbors very special birding spots for watching birds in Cuzco, by the way, there are some private conservation areas for birding with amazing Polylepis forest spots for funariidae bird species mostly. Abra Malaga is a nice place to go birding, but birders should be able to do a little bit of walking in a steep of 35 degrees approximately.
Abra Malaga would be high (over 14 000 feet high) for some birders but very beautiful, this is the best place to see Royal Cinclodes (Cinclodes aricomae) there were only around two hundred individuals on 2001. This nice species depends mostly on these habitats of Polylepis forest.
If you are interesting to go birding in Cuzco – Peru, you can ask to some or our experienced local guides from our local birding organization in Cusco.
